Every 15 seconds the tail lifts to one side, free-falls and then swishes to its natural down position. The swishing tail motion and flash of white from the decoy's rear attracts the attention of bucks.
Bucks identify the tail motion, flash of white and Tail Trick Deer Decoy as being a real deer. Bucks usually stare for a moment and then move towards the decoy (deer). The realism of motion and natural looks lures bucks closer.
As bucks approach Tail Trick Deer Decoys they come closer to your hunting stand which creates a shot opportunity.
How many times have you seen a whitetail buck in a large field....too far out of range for a good shot? How often have you seen a great buck moving, but all too quickly he was out of sight before you had a shot opportunity? Then, how many times have you gotten the big buck close enough and still enough for the shot – and at the last minute he spotted you?
Hunting whitetails successfully requires a shot opportunity. It's not enough to see a buck, you must also have a good shot opportunity. It also helps to have something to attract a whitetails' attention and to lure him into range. Tail motion deer decoys from Tail Trick eliminate all of these problems.
The Tail Trick Difference
At Tail Trick, we believe that a deer decoy needs to have four features to be effective:
- Natural Looks
- Positive Body Language
- Portability
- Motion
We believe the last one, motion, is the most important. But let's look at the others first.
Natural Looks
A decoy doesn't have to be life size to be effective. After all, deer can't measure. Nor do natural looks result from using photographs. Three dimensionality and natural looks are the result of a recognizable outline with the natural highlights and shadows normally caused by outdoor lighting. All bucks need is the right first impression, combined with the right kind of movement.
To achieve this effect, Tail Trick's Buck Magnet Deer Decoy and Total Attraction Deer Decoy feature a patented Compact 3D/2D Sculpted Design. This design replicates the recognizable outline, highlights and shadows of a whitetail deer. To bucks, the sculpted body with its swishing tail looks three dimensional and natural.
Body Posture Sends the Right Message
Body posture is important in a deer decoy. We know that a deer will pin its ears back when angry, that when a buck has its head facing approaching bucks it is a threatening stance (it says he may be about to charge), and that a head down means, "I'm just here, content and grazing."
To approaching whitetails, Tail Trick's Buck Magnet Deer Decoy and Total Attraction Deer Decoy look as if they're walking away. This "rear end view" posture is non-threatening to bucks and they perceive it as positive body language. Relaxed ears and low head height let bucks know they won't be challenged or charged as they approach. A full size decoy with its body and head facing approaching bucks is in a threatening pose. When bucks see negative body language they will be very cautious before coming closer.
Portability
Full size deer decoys are too big and bulky, making them awkward to carry. They usually weigh about 20 pounds. It can be too much trouble to carry such decoys along with your weapon, tree stand and day pack. If it's too cumbersome to carry, you won't want to be bothered with it and will leave it at home. "Garage decoys" never work.
A deer decoy needs portability. By portability, I mean light-weight, having small size, and having single piece body construction. Buck Magnet Deer Decoy and Total Attraction Deer Decoys are made of lightweight high density foam and weight only 3.5 pounds and 3.0 pounds, respectively. Single piece body construction means Tail Trick decoys do NOT require assembly in the field. The tail and tail motor still have to be installed but the body does not have to be assembled. Tail Tricks are only 3" thick which makes them compact and easy to bring along in the carry bag that's provided.
Motion
Bucks approaching a decoy are looking for the tail swish that is the "official deer signal" that it is safe to come closer. Just as the flashing, raised tail signals the danger alarm, so a swishing tail signals safety. Without this signal many whitetail bucks will be too wary to come close enough to give you a good shot opportunity. Tail Trick's Buck Magnet Deer Decoy and Total Attraction Deer Decoy have a tail that swishes every 15 seconds. The tail lifts to one side and free-falls to its natural down position. The swishing tail motion and flash of white from the rear of the decoy attracts the attention of bucks and lures them closer for a shot opportunity.
Three Reasons Motion Matters
1.Motion Attracts a Buck's Attention
Deer decoys need a "flash of white" to get the attention of whitetails in the distance. Motionless deer decoys have no way of attracting the attention of deer in the distance. Tail Trick's Buck Magnet and Total Attraction Deer Decoys swish their tails every 15 seconds. As the tail swishes, the white rump flashes and "moons" the deer in the distance. The "mooning" gets the attention of bucks and they recognize the image as that of another deer feeding.
2.Tail Motion Creates Realism
Before the big buck will come out of his safe hideout, he will look for a certain pattern of sights and impressions. He's looking for the presence of other deer, the right body posture in those deer, and the familiar sight of swishing tails. The swishing tail motion of a Tail Trick Deer Decoy communicates calmness and safety. Together, these sights make up the pattern that tells bucks that it's OK to come closer, luring the big one out of the woods. A deer decoy without motion says something isn't right; this causes some bucks to remain in cover.
3.Motion Lures Bucks Closer
Once a buck is convinced it is safe to come out with the other deer, he will want to be with them. He will move closer in order to feed, socialize, dominate or mate with the other "deer." Bucks will often stare for a moment and then begin moving toward the decoy. At a certain point, he will stop – when he does, take the shot!
Tail motion deer decoys can be used with full size motionless decoys in order to create greater realism and effectiveness.
